Angelina Jolie (originally Angelina Jolie Voight) is an American actress and director, famous for her sexy appeal, edginess and humanitarian work. She won an Academy Award for her supporting performance as a psychiatrist in Girl, Interrupted (1999).Jolie, daughter of actor Jon Voight, spent much of her growing up in New York before relocating to Los Angeles at age 11. She was a student at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute for two years. She after that, she enrolled at Beverly Hills High School. New York University later taught her drama. In addition to appearing in theatre productions, she modeled and appeared in music videos.Jolie's first big movie performance was in Hackers (1995) in the filming of which she got married to her first husband, British actor Jonny Lee Miller (married 1996 divorced in 1999). Similar to several other films, Hackers did not find an audience. Jolie was the segregationist wife of Alabama's governor. She received the attention of many in 1997. The actress later won a Golden Globe Award. She played the role of a supermodel suffering from drug addiction in the HBO movie Gia in 1999. Her performance was rewarded with numerous awards including an award of the Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award. She was a co-star with John Cusack in Pushing Tin in 1999. In the next year, she got married to Thornton (divorced in 2003). She played the wife of a carjacker (Nicolas Cage) in Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000) and later adopted the British accent and mastered street fighting and kickboxing for the roles of the title in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003). In 2004 she portrayed the mother of Alexander the Great in Oliver Stone's Alexander and also starred opposite Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, a sci-fi thriller set in 1930s New York City. Both films failed at the box office, but Jolie's Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) was an enormous success. Jolie played a character pretending to play a normal domestic worker while working on the film. Brad Pitt became her partner in the film.
